Yost Family Barndominium

The benefits of today’s “barndominium” movement are obvious: they typically feature wide-open interior spaces, are highly customizable, and are often preferred by owners with unique specifications, such as a commercial shop area or large-vehicle storage.

Near Montezuma, Kansas (population: 975), you’ll find a striking barndominium that showcases the customization and high-end aesthetics possible with the right design-and-build partners. The Yost family barndominium, erected by GBS Enterprises, Bel Aire, Kansas, is a two-story home-commercial shop concept with nearly 12,000 sq. ft. of space.

Inside the residence area, distinctive features include a large first-floor family area and custom family and commercial kitchens. From there, a two-tiered staircase leads to the second floor, featuring multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as a large central area overlooking the ground level.

From the second floor, an interior entry opens onto the owner-requested 42 ft. x 87 ft. shop area, with vehicle access provided by multiple overhead garage doors. A two-sided wraparound patio with an overhead canopy completes the barndominium concept.

A unique aspect of the Yost barndominium is how perfectly it combines the Behlen Building Systems components with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) from a third-party manufacturer. GBS has extensive experience integrating SIPs into Behlen’s metal building systems. SIPs are especially advantageous because they can be customized to a building’s design, allowing these pre-fabricated panels to be installed into a metal building system without requiring field adjustments. Using SIPs speeds up building assembly while offering high insulation values and sound-deadening properties.
