Self-framing system

The Behlen S-Span™ Building System offers a unique and economical approach to construction and concrete footing design. The support strength for S-Span buildings is formed into the corrugated steel wall panels, eliminating the need for interior frames. The result is a wide-open, column-free interior space, ideal for:

  • aircraft hangars
  • recreational facilities
  • arenas and exposition centers
  • warehouses and bulk storage

Integrated Roof and Ceiling System

With the Behlen S-Span™ System, the roof and ceiling are integral to the building’s structural support. This roof system can be installed on Behlen’s load-bearing steel walls, as well as masonry walls, precast concrete walls, or perimeter column systems.

The self-supporting S-Span Roof System features two separate, but continuous, chords of steel panels joined together by a diagonal strut assembly, forming either a Convex arch or flat Dubl-Panl profile.

  • The top chord forms a finished, weather-proof roof.
  • The bottom chord forms an attractive finished ceiling.

No special fasteners are needed; only standard Behlen components. This roof design also allows for high R-value insulation, helping to improve energy efficiency.

While the roof is designed for the S-Span building, it’s also the perfect answer for pre-cast concrete or masonry wall construction.

Why builders, architects, and building owners choose S-Span™:

  • Integrated roof and structure: S-Span integrates the building’s structural frame and roof system into a unified truss assembly positioned atop structural wall panels. This design eliminates the need for secondary framing and significantly reduces material usage.
  • Simplified construction: With fewer components and no need for purlins or traditional trusses, S-Span buildings go up quickly and efficiently, saving time and labor costs on site.
  • Proven performance: Backed by decades of real-world application, the S-Span system has earned a reputation for dependable, high-performance building solutions.
  • Exterior design flexibility: S-Span supports a wide range of exterior finishes, from standard corrugated steel and color-coated ADP panels to masonry, wood, or even glass. This flexibility makes it ideal for diverse applications and aesthetic preferences.
  • Attractive, functional interiors: Open and appealing, S-Span interiors allow lighting, speakers, and other equipment to be bolted directly to the ceiling. Mechanical systems and wiring can be concealed between the roof and ceiling for a clean, streamlined appearance.
